How to Learn Quran Online: A Complete Beginner Guide for Kids and Adults
A clear, practical guide to learning the Quran online: the stages, how to choose a teacher and a routine that works.

Learning the Quran is one of the most rewarding things a Muslim can do, and today you can do it from home. Whether you are a parent looking for a teacher for your child, or an adult starting from the Arabic alphabet, this guide explains the steps, what to look for in a teacher, and how to make progress that lasts.
Why learn the Quran online?
Online classes remove the biggest obstacles: travel time, a lack of qualified teachers nearby, and fixed schedules. With a live video class you get the same one-to-one attention as in a classroom, with a teacher who can hear every letter you pronounce and correct it on the spot.
For families in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, online learning also means access to teachers who graduated from Al-Azhar University, the best known centre of Islamic learning, without leaving home.
The four stages of learning the Quran
1. Noorani Qaida: letters and sounds
Every beginner starts here. You learn the Arabic letters, their shapes, the short and long vowels, and how sounds connect. This stage builds the foundation for correct reading, and it usually takes a few weeks to a few months depending on practice.
2. Reading the Quran with Tajweed
Tajweed means giving every letter its right. You learn where each sound comes from, how long to hold it, and the rules that change how letters are pronounced next to each other. Reading with Tajweed is the heart of proper recitation, and it is best learned with a teacher who listens and corrects. You can explore this in our Quran and Tajweed courses.
3. Memorization (Hifz)
Memorization works best with a steady plan: a small new portion each day, a review of the previous days, and a weekly revision of older material. A teacher keeps you consistent and makes sure you memorize accurately, not only quickly.
4. Understanding and Arabic
Many students then continue with Arabic and basic Islamic studies so they can understand what they recite. Even a little vocabulary changes how a verse feels when you read it.
How to choose an online Quran teacher
The teacher matters more than the platform. Look for these signs:
- Proper qualifications. A teacher with an ijazah or a degree from a recognised institution such as Al-Azhar.
- One-to-one classes. Individual attention lets the teacher correct your pronunciation, which group classes cannot do well.
- A free trial. You should be able to meet the teacher before you pay.
- Clear progress reports. You should always know what was studied and what comes next.
- Flexible times. Classes should fit around school, work and your time zone.
You can meet our teachers on the Our Teachers page, and every new student starts with a free class.
A simple weekly routine that works
- Attend your live classes at the same times each week. Routine matters more than length.
- Practice for 10 to 15 minutes on the days between classes, repeating what the teacher corrected.
- Listen to a good reciter for a few minutes a day to train your ear.
- Keep a small notebook for new words, rules and mistakes to revisit.
Two or three classes a week suit most beginners. If you want faster progress you can move to four or five, and you can compare options on our pricing page.
Tips for parents
- Choose a quiet spot and a regular time so class becomes a habit.
- Keep classes short for young children. Thirty minutes is plenty at the start.
- Sit nearby for the first few classes, then step back as your child gains confidence.
- Celebrate small steps, such as finishing a page or learning a new letter.
- Ask the teacher for a short progress note every month.
Meet an Al-Azhar certified teacher, test the platform and set a plan that fits your family. No payment is needed.

How long does it take to learn to read the Quran?
Most beginners who study two to three times a week can read the Arabic letters within a few weeks and read simple verses with Tajweed within three to six months. Progress depends on age, practice at home and the teacher.
Can adults learn Quran online from zero?
Yes. Many of our students are adults who never learned the Arabic alphabet. A good teacher starts from the letters and sounds and moves at your pace.
What age can a child start Quran classes online?
Many children begin around age five or six, once they can sit and focus for a short class. Thirty-minute classes work well for young children.
How much do online Quran classes cost?
Plans at Guidance Tutors start at $38 per month for two 30-minute classes a week. See the pricing page for every plan.
